  • Notes
    • Isaac Newton Rutter's Timeline (1821 - 1917)

      State to State by Year
      PA = Birth in 1821 to no later than1839
      OH = 1840 to 1875/1878
      KS = 1880 - 1895
      OK = 1900 - 1907
      KS = 1910 -- with son Lewis
      MO = 1911 - 1917 with daughter Cynthia, but buried in OK (same as wife)

      Chronological Facts

      *Isaac Newton Rutter was likely born in Dauphin, Pennsylvania, not Leacock as often reported. Andrew Rutter's family moved from Leacock, Lancaster County to Dauphin County between the 1810 and 1820 censuses. Isaac was born in 1821.

      *The family moved from Pennsylvania to Ohio somewhere between 1831 and 1839 [Therefore, Isaac's age was somewhere between 10 to 18].

      *Isaac married Mary Ann Kollar in 1849 in Ohio. Wife Mary Ann Kollar was born in Ohio to parents George Kollar Jr and Margaret Haverstock.

      *Interesting fact--Isaac's wife Mary Ann's parents, George Kollar Jr and Margaret Haverstock, married in 1818. Her parents' siblings George Haverstock and Margaret 'Peggy' Kollar married the year before in 1817.

      Tailor and Farmer
      * 1850 census shows that Isaac N. Rutter was a tailor (age 27).
      * 1860 census (in poor condition) appears to indicate tailor.
      * 1863 Civil War registration and 1870 census shows profession as farmer.
      * 1880 & 1885 shows profession as tailor again (59).
      * 1890 census was destroyed.
      * 1900 census shows Isaac (79) farming with his wife Mary, raising his grandson.
      * 1910 census shows a retired Isaac (89) living with son Lewis and his family.

      *Youngest brother Silas M. Rutter was a tailor too, on censuses in 1850 and 1860

      In 1880, Silas was farming, but in 1900, he was back to tailoring (died in 1902).

      *In 1880, the Rutter family moved from Ohio to Netawaka, Kansas. Daughter Margaret (Maggie), who had married Hiram Haverstock in 1875, moved to Netawaka, as did young adult sons Lemon Freemont, Lewis Eugene and John March. Only daughter Cynthia stayed in Ohio with her husband, John W. Powell. Scandal -- Eldest son Andrew Kollar Rutter travelled with his wife Matilda and toddler son to Kansas too. A second son was born in Kansas in 1878. However, what happened in the next few years is a bit of a mystery. Andrew Kollar's wife Matilda can be seen on the 1880 census, 14 miles from Netawaka (where the rest of the Rutters were living), with two toddler sons but her husband Andrew missing (never to be reunited). Two of her brothers were living in her household. In 1890, Matilda appears to have died in Netawaka. Andrew cannot be found on the 1880 census, but pops up in 1900 in Colorado with a new wife Harriet (they had married around the time of Matilda's death). Censuses show second wife Harriet gave birth to only one child who didn't survive.

      *On the 1895 census, grandkids Mary Rutter (14) and Irvin Rutter (6) lived with Isaac (75) and Mary Ann (65), and on the 1900 census, Irvin was still with his grandparents. It appears that Irvin, and likely Mary, were children of Lemon Freemont Rutter. It is suggested that Irvin died in 1902 (before his grandmother Mary Ann's death in 1907).

      *Censuses show that Isaac and Mary Ann Rutter moved frequently -- from state to state but also, county to county. Only one set of consecutive censuses in the same county/state.

      *Obituary from the Pawnee, OK Newspaper dated 25 Jan 1917 reported:

      -Died at the 'extreme' age of 96 years, 6 mo and 21 days in Kansas City, MO.

      -Born in Ohio (born in PA on six censuses)

      - 23 years ago (1894) Isaac had come west and settled in Arkansa City, Kansas (censuses show that Isaac lived in Winfield, KS in 1895--15 miles from Arkansas City, but that he had actually moved west from Ohio in 1880, 37 years before)

      -At the opening of Pawnee County, OK, Isaac came to live in the town and stayed until 1911.

      -In 1911, he went to lived with his son-in-law & daughter (Cynthia Powell) in Kansas City, MO.

      -Son John Rutter was once the sheriff of Pawnee, OK.

      -Isaac Newton Rutter's remains were escorted to Pawnee, Ok from Kansas City, MO by his grandson Charles Powell.

      -Interment at Highland Cemetery at 2pm in the afternoon.

      *Of the six children that lived to adulthood, three of his four sons moved and eventually died in Los Angeles, CA. Youngest son John Marsh Rutter died in Cairo, IL. Daughter Cynthia Powell died in OK. And daughter Margaret 'Maggie' and husband Hiram Haverstock moved to Netawaka, KS with Isaac and Mary Ann in 1880 and lived out their lives in Netawaka until they died in 1933.
